How to Care For Diamond Jewelry

Okay, you finally found the perfect diamond ring, earrings or necklace. Now, you need to keep that piece looking as great as it did when you received it.

Probably just tossing your diamonds into a jewelry box is not the greatest idea in the world. It is really heartbreaking to find that beautiful diamond chipped because it was knocked against another diamond in your jewelry box. Sure a diamond is the hardest natural substance on Planet Earth but knock two of them together and something's gotta give. And normally it is a piece of one of the diamonds, or if you are unlucky like I was, both diamonds chip! If you don't have a jewelry box that has the little slots to store your rings in, then put each ring, earring or necklace into a cloth pouch. It takes up more space but if it will save just one of your stones it is worth it!

There is nothing sadder than a diamond without a sparkle and that is so easy to fix. Skin oil, body and hand creams, and just plain dirt (yes, some of us really do forgot to take off our rings when we dig in our gardens and do all the other things that get your hands dirty and well the sad news is your rings get dirty too, just like your hands!) I have been known to forget to take off my rings when I made bread, now that is a real mess to clean. But clean is possible and relatively easy. A little dish soap and water and if needs be an old toothbrush will clean all the gunk from around the stone and shine it up like new! Once in a great while (and I've only had to do it once) the sparkle and shine just is hard to find. Use a weak solution of ammonia and water - I use 2 tablespoons of ammonia to 1/2 cup of water and that old soft toothbrush to get down between the crevices around the stone or stones. Don't be overzealous in your cleaning as you can scratch the gold or silver! Once you've cleaned your rings, necklaces, and earrings just let them air dry and if you feel the overwhelming urge, polish them with a soft dry cloth. Voila! Sparkles!

A good protective measure is to take your diamond rings into a jeweler every once in a while and have the settings checked. Getting a once a year checkup for your diamonds is a good time frame if you wear them all the time. If you only wear them once in awhile, then take them in every couple years. Having lost stones due to carelessness (yes, I know it is hard to believe), I am a firm believer in the ounce of prevention theory! Let the jeweler check them and tighten the settings if need be. It doesn't matter if you have four-prong, six-prong, and low-profile channel or bezel settings, they come loose just like other settings, so have them checked.

You can always take your diamond jewelry to a jeweler to be cleaned. They have steam or ultrasound cleaners. If you have antique diamond jewelry, I would nix the ultrasound as that can make worn fissures worse.

There is also the alternative of buying (heaven forbid that one!) a jewelry cleaner. Simple, easy, and not really that expensive, it gets my vote every time!

And if you've worn that ring once too often, or the necklace is so last year, well sell it on your favorite online auction. Then you can afford that awesome little diamond bracelet you found there yesterday.

Recently my sister-in-law's grandmother passed away and she was left with a rather large collection of antique silver jewelry. The collection included a number of different pieces that were considerably tarnished and while some were enhanced by the presence of the tarnish some needed to have it removed in order to shine up to their full potential. The pieces that were enhanced by the tarnish were those that had intricate engravings and etchings on them. These pieces needed only a quick polish to shine them up in order to look beautiful but the others needed something a little stronger to do the job.

So my sister-in-law searched the internet for products that would take away the tarnish on the silver pieces that she wanted removed. Upon searching Google and a number of different sites she found some companies offering these products.

Some of these products are Tarn-X, Silver Lightning, and Metallux. All of these products are said to work very well on silver and are fairly inexpensive as well but they all also contain harsh chemicals that for one may irritate your skin and second of all are dangerous to have in the house if there are children living there. And although my sister-in-law didn't have a child at the time she was expecting which was also another reason to not use harsh chemical in and of itself, so she decided to look into alternative ways to get rid of the tarnish marring up certain pieces of her collection.

So, we went back to Google and we did another search but this time for homemade tarnish removers for silver jewelry. We found a number of helpful sites that detailed exactly how to make homemade silver jewelry cleaners that were safe and lacking harsh chemicals but yet still would work good enough to remove the tarnish. These homemade cleaners may contain things such as salt, soap, baking soda, and/or water. As you can see none of these materials are at all threatening or dangerous and they work well too.

For one particular homemade cleaner you will need salt, baking soda, water, aluminum foil, soap, and a glass pan big enough to hold these materials plus your jewelry or other silver pieces that you are cleaning. First you will want to cover the bottom of the glass pan with the aluminum foil in order to prevent the bottom of the pan from darkening. After you do this you will boil a solution made up of one quart of water, one tablespoon of baking soda, along with one teaspoon of salt. While you are in the process of boiling the solution you may place your silver in the pan on top of the aluminum foil. After the solution is boiled pour it over the silver and let it sit for five minutes before washing it with warm, soapy water and let dry. This is a safe and easy way to clean silver jewelry and low cost as well.

There is one great thing about anything that relates to Ireland and that is the fact everything, be it the tradition of St. Patrick's day or the Cliffs of Mohan, literally everything has a story. And you cannot get more Irish than the story of St. Brigid and her cross. It's a beautiful representation of how the Pagan and the Christian mythology is weaved together and makes for the rich tapestry of Irish history.

The story of St. Brigid's Cross cannot be told without telling the story of St. Brigit first. She is considered as one of the patron saints of Ireland (much like St. Patrick) and her feast day is on February 1st.

Brigid was born out of wedlock between Dubhthack, who was a pagan chieftain of Leinster, and Brocessa, one of his slaves. Because the child was a girl, the mother was sold to Connaught and the little girl was given to a Druid to be educated. She was raised a pagan and the exact time of her conversion to Christianity is still uncertain but once she converted to Christianity, Brigid is believed to have formed a convent in Clara, Co. Offaly.

But it was the abbey in Kildare that she became famous for - after all she is considered to be the guiding force behind the first female Christian community in Ireland. When she came to Kildare she extinguished the ritual fire of the Druids and lit a new fire dedicated to Christ which remained burning long after she was gone. Not to mention that the abbey in Kildare became one of the strongholds of learning in Europe. St. Brigid was revered by men and women alike for her gentle spirit, common sense and charitable work. She was laid to rest in 525 AD at Kil Dara.

In 835 AD her remains were moved to a tomb in Downpatrick that is also believed to hold the remains of other 2 of Ireland's most cherished saints - St. Patrick and St. Columcille.

St. Brigid's Cross is also known in Gaelic as Cros Bríde and it is believed to have been inspired by the pagan sun wheel. And although the interpretations of this story are plentiful, the legend goes that a pagan chieftain of a neighboring village was on his death bed and delirious. St. Brigit was sent to talk to him about Christ.

Since the man was completely incoherent, St. Brigit started to console him and she picked up the rushes that were strewn across the floor and started to weave them into a cross.

The chieftain was shaken from his delirium and asked her what she was doing. She told him the story of Christ and the cross. The sick chieftain listened to her with interest and before he died he converted to Christianity and was baptized.

Since then, on February 1st on the day of St. Brigid's liturgical celebration and what is also considered to be the first day of spring in Ireland the crosses made of rushes are weaved.

And while you might be hard stretched to find St. Brigid's cross on display in urban parts of Ireland, in the rural areas they are still on display especially since the belief is that they protect the house from evil and fire. One place in urban Ireland where you can be certain you will find an example of St. Brigid's cross is the Irish Celtic jewelers, who use its design as an inspiration for pendants.

Even though St. Brigid might be long gone, she is still one of Ireland's most celebrated patron saints much in the same rank as St. Patrick.

The woman of gentle spirit, who befriended people and animals alike, who dedicated her life to Christ, is still remembered today not only in Ireland but also in continental Europe where her teachings have spread over time.
